Combining components

Resistors in series add directly. Resistors in parallel combine reciprocally — the total is always less than the smallest individual value.

Capacitors are the opposite. Caps in parallel add; caps in series combine reciprocally. Easy trick: capacitance behaves like 1/resistance.
